What You Can Do to Get Rid of Bad Breath

Halitosis Treatment in Fairfax VA

Bad breath. Halitosis.

Whatever you call it, it’s unpleasant.

It can be temporary if you’ve had food or beverages that cause it (onions, garlic, coffee, and alcohol, for example). Smoking can also cause bad breath.

If you have bad breath that persists, however, it is not only unpleasant. It could be a sign that there is an underlying problem.

The obvious issue is poor oral hygiene, but if you floss and brush regularly and you still have bad breath, it might be an indicator of gum disease or cavities.

Whatever the reason behind the bad breath, you want to get rid of it. It might mean a trip to your Fairfax, VA, dentist to find out if there is an underlying disorder that needs to be addressed.

How to Get Rid of Bad Breath

It’s easy to understand how bad breath happens when you think about the hundreds of bacteria that live in our mouths. They can live on our tongues or below our gum line, causing unpleasant odors.

Here are some suggestions for getting rid of those odors:

  • Make sure you see your dentist regularly for cleanings and examinations.
  • Brush your teeth after every meal. Floss at least once a day.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Swap out your toothbrush every couple of months.
  • Use an alcohol-free mouthwash.
  • Chew gum with xylitol.

You can also try chewing on a sprig of fresh mint, basil, parsley, or cilantro. A piece of washed lemon or orange rind can also freshen your breath.

Denture-wearers should be sure to remove their appliances every night and clean thoroughly.
